The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has confirmed that a newborn baby girl found abandoned near Bronyibima Estate in Elmina is in stable condition and receiving medical care.
In a statement dated 19 February 2026, the Ministry said the infant — believed to be about one day old at the time she was discovered — is under close medical supervision to ensure her safety and well-being.
“The baby, believed to be approximately one day old, is currently receiving medical attention and is reported to be in a stable condition,” the statement said.
Officials from the Department of Social Welfare have since assumed temporary custody of the child as authorities work to establish her identity and trace her family.
The Ministry said the Ghana Police Service is collaborating with social welfare officers to investigate the circumstances surrounding the abandonment and to locate the child’s mother or any close relatives.
“Officials from the Department of Social Welfare have taken temporary custody of the child to ensure her safety. The Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare, continues investigations to identify and locate the mother or any close relatives,” the statement added.

MoGCSP assured the public that the child’s welfare remains its top priority and that arrangements have been made to provide proper care while efforts to reunite her with family continue.
The Ministry also commended residents who intervened to rescue the baby and appealed for public cooperation with the investigation.
It urged parents or guardians facing difficulties, including unplanned or crisis pregnancies, to seek assistance through available social welfare support systems rather than abandoning children.
As part of its response, the Ministry encouraged the public to make use of its Helpline of Hope Call Centre, which offers counselling, support and reporting services through toll-free lines 0800-800-800 and 0800-900-900.
Describing child abandonment as a serious violation of children’s rights, the Ministry reiterated its commitment to protecting vulnerable children across the country.
The incident has sparked concern among residents in Elmina, with authorities calling for vigilance and community support as investigations continue.
