The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has announced that the city will soon have its first metro transport system using electric buses. In an interview with MBN TV, he revealed that the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) is introducing electric buses that will offer affordable fares, with prices ranging from ₵3-4₵ for any route.

The mayor appealed to transport operators and drivers to avoid overcharging passengers, citing reduced fuel prices. He noted that some drivers had been arrested and warned for overcharging but have since shown remorse.

“I arrested some of the drivers for doing that and they came back to me showing remorse, and since then I haven’t heard any passenger complain about fares been over charged but rather what they said the drivers do is that they pick you short short but as for prices that they will charge you ₵20 for ₵5 they have stopped due to how spoke and dealt with them”, he said.

“I’m pleading with everybody in Accra to pray, we are going to have a Metro Transport which is going to be for the city, this one is owned by the city. This belongs to Accra so anyone in Accra is entitled to it. We are going to do this, we are just praying and hoping that we will bring it very soon, you are going to enjoy it, I’m going to enjoy it so good people of Accra will see something different very very soon”, he added.

Mayor Allotey emphasized that the electric buses will be owned by the city, making it a first for Accra. He addressed concerns about maintenance, stating that electric buses are less prone to problems since they run on batteries and have a charging system.

Residents are eagerly awaiting the launch, expecting a more affordable and efficient transport system.
