The Ghana Education Service (GES) has stepped up monitoring of the school feeding programme, launching a series of unannounced visits to schools across the country. This move aims to ensure compliance with programme guidelines and improve the quality of meals served to students.

The GES has been working with caterers and other stakeholders to address challenges affecting the programme, including delays in payments and inadequate funding. The unannounced visits will help identify areas for improvement and ensure that students receive nutritious meals.

The school feeding programme is a key government initiative aimed at improving education outcomes and reducing poverty. By monitoring the programme closely, the GES hopes to enhance its effectiveness and reach more students.

Director-General of GES, Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis, together with his Management Team, has over the past few weeks carried out unannounced visits to selected schools across several regions to assess the implementation of the feeding programme.

The inspections, conducted alongside the Chair of the GES Council, Prof. Mawutor Avoke, and other Management members, focused on the hygienic conditions under which meals are prepared, the type, quality, and nutritional value of food served to learners, and feedback from students, teachers, and kitchen staff on ways to improve the programme.

According to GES Management, the surprise visits are intended to provide firsthand, real-time information to guide policy decisions and strengthen the school feeding system. The inspections will be conducted periodically as part of efforts to ensure high standards across schools.

GES reaffirmed its commitment to creating safe, supportive, and nourishing learning environments to ensure that all learners are healthy, well-nourished, and ready to learn.
