The Ministry of Transport has introduced an emergency bus service on four major Accra routes to ease transportation challenges during peak hours. The service, which begins today, December 10, 2025, aims to provide relief to commuters who have been struggling with unreliable and expensive transportation options.
The four routes affected are:
- Accra-Madina-Adenta
- Accra-Achimota-Amasaman
- Accra-Mallam-Kasoa
- Accra-Tema Beach Road
Each route will have a minimum of eight buses operating between 4:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. daily. The Ministry is working with Intercity STC to deploy buses that return from long-distance trips during the day.
Transport Minister Joseph Nikpe Bukari announced the initiative, citing the need to address the worsening transportation situation in Accra. He warned commercial drivers operating outside recognized unions to stop charging exorbitant fares and urged commuters to report any issues.
Speaking to journalists, the Minister said the move is part of an interim measure to cushion the public, especially workers returning home after work. He explained that the Ministry is working with Intercity STC to use buses that return from long-distance journeys during the day.
“We are deploying buses starting today to support commuters during peak hours, so they can get home safely,” he said. Mr. Bukari added that the numbers will be increased later to serve more people.
He further warned commercial drivers who operate without joining a recognised transport union, stressing that the Ministry will clamp down on those who overcharge passengers and disregard transport regulations.
“We are embarking on a serious exercise to flush out drivers who do not belong to unions. You either belong to a union, or you have no business on our roads,” he stated.
The government plans to increase the number of buses and clamp down on unregistered drivers to ensure safer and more reliable transportation for commuters.
