Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has emphasized the importance of mentorship and capacity building for first-term Members of Parliament (MPs). He recently organized a four-day orientation program for newly elected MPs in the 9th Parliament, aiming to equip them with the necessary knowledge, tools, and insights to navigate parliamentary processes effectively.

The orientation program covered a range of topics, including the Standing Orders of Parliament, legislative procedures, committee systems, the budget approval process, and ethical standards for MPs. Participants also engaged in interactive sessions with seasoned parliamentarians, governance experts, and parliamentary staff, who shared their experiences and best practices for impactful legislative work.

Speaker Bagbin’s initiative is part of his broader vision to position Parliament as a leading institution for leadership and government education in Africa. He has also launched a scholarship scheme aimed at equipping MPs and Parliamentary Service staff with advanced academic training, to enhance their leadership and governance skills.

The scholarship scheme, which is a partnership with Noble University (NiBS), provides scholarships for doctoral programs in leadership, governance, and innovation. The Speaker emphasized that the initiative is expected to have a ripple effect on the country’s governance, as beneficiaries apply their newfound knowledge and skills to drive transformation and improve the lives of Ghanaians

The Speaker made the remarks during an engagement session held with first-term MPs aimed at strengthening collaboration and bridging the gap between his office and newly elected legislators. He stressed that mentorship is a crucial tool for building a more efficient and united Parliament.
