The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially launched its amended constitution, marking a significant milestone in the party’s efforts to strengthen internal governance and align its structures with modern political demands. The launch ceremony, held at the party’s headquarters in Accra, brought together national executives, party leaders, stakeholders, and supporters.
The amended constitution introduces reforms aimed at enhancing transparency, deepening grassroots participation, and positioning the NPP for more efficient administration and electoral operations. Key changes include the expansion of the electoral college to grant voting rights to former executives at both district and national levels, addressing issues of voter apathy and dissatisfaction among party executives.
General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong highlighted that the amendments reflect lessons learned from the 2024 elections, citing member neglect and a breakdown in communication strategy as key reasons behind the party’s defeat. The NPP has also introduced new measures to strengthen its internal structures, including the appointment of specialized roles such as Legal Director, IT Coordinator, and PWDA Coordinator.
The party reaffirmed its long-standing mantra, “NPP Development in Freedom,” and invited members of the party and the general public to actively participate in what it termed a historic occasion.
The launch event featured Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin as the special guest, and was attended by prominent party figures, including former President Agyekum Kufour and former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
The running mate to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the 2024 election, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, purchased the first copy of the amended constitution for GH¢50,000, a gesture that party officials described as a reflection of loyalty and dedication to the party’s ideals.
The launch is expected to serve as a foundation for stronger organisational cohesion and set the stage for the NPP’s future political and developmental endeavours.
