England’s women’s national team, the Lionesses, secured a 2-0 victory over Ghana’s Black Queens in an international friendly match at St Mary’s Stadium in Southampton on Tuesday. Lucia Kendall scored her first senior international goal in the 6th minute, and Alessia Russo sealed the win with a penalty in the 95th minute.

The match marked the first-ever meeting between the two nations, with England dominating possession and creating several scoring opportunities. Ghana’s goalkeeper, Cynthia Konlan, made impressive saves to keep the scoreline respectable, earning praise from fans and coaches alike.
“As a coach, you always want to win, but we are 67th in the world and faced a team that may be the best in the world right now,” said Ghana coach Kim Lars Björkegren. “We can be proud of our performance, and we feel we are moving in the right direction.

The win extends England’s unbeaten run against African opposition, with their last loss being a 3-0 defeat to Nigeria in 2004. Ghana will now focus on preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
