President John Mahama is set to inspect road projects in Accra as part of his government’s ‘Big Push’ initiative, aimed at transforming Ghana’s road network and making it the best in West Africa. The ‘Big Push’ is a nationwide infrastructure drive that seeks to boost economic productivity and connectivity, with a focus on rehabilitating key roads and constructing new ones.

Mahama has expressed optimism that Ghana will have the best roads in West Africa within the next two years, citing the ongoing rehabilitation of the 195km Wenchi-Bole-Sawla-Wa Road as a flagship project. The project is expected to reduce travel time between Wenchi and Wa by over 50%, cut vehicle operating costs by 40%, and lower accident rates by 45%.

The ‘Big Push’ initiative is backed by a $10 billion investment and is expected to create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and improve the overall quality of life for Ghanaians. Mahama has urged citizens to be patient and accept the inconvenience caused by the construction works, assuring them that the benefits will be worth it.

Some of the key road projects under the ‘Big Push’ initiative include the Atimpoku to Aflao road, the Wenchi-Bole-Sawla-Wa Road, and the Accra-Kumasi Expressway. The government has also announced plans to construct interchanges in eight communities as part of the project.

Mahama’s government has committed to prioritizing local labor and suppliers in the construction process, ensuring that the benefits of the ‘Big Push’ initiative are shared by all Ghanaians.

President Mahama also appealed to the public for patience as construction intensifies nationwide. “Let me apologise to Ghanaians, from the launch of this Big Push here, the whole of Ghana is going to become a construction site. So bear with the contractors, but know that we are suffering to gain.”

He noted that monitoring will be strict and continuous to ensure contractors deliver on schedule. “We’re going to keep monitoring the progress of all the projects. So they will visit the projects regularly from time to time at every stage to see the status of the projects. They will take pictures, they will take videos.”

The President added he will personally track the work from his office. “I’ll be sitting in my office, and I can see what First Sky is doing on the Ho–Aflao road. I can see what Oswal is doing on the Afienya–Dodowa road.

“Every contractor working on every road in this country. I’ll sit in Accra at the Flagstaff House, and I’ll see the work they are doing,” he said.
