Heavy security has been deployed at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi ahead of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s, final ruling on the Bawku chieftaincy dispute. The palace is expected to announce the outcome of months of mediation efforts, aimed at resolving the decades-old conflict between the Mamprusi and Kusaasi groups.
The Asantehene’s mediation began in April 2025, following a request by President John Dramani Mahama, and has involved intensive consultations with both factions. Although talks were briefly suspended, they resumed in May, with the Asantehene noting a period of relative calm in the Bawku municipality.
The Bawku chieftaincy dispute has resulted in significant violence, loss of life, and property damage over the years. The conflict has disrupted daily life, with recurring curfews, attacks, and instability affecting the local economy and community.
The prolonged instability has fractured community relations, disrupted livelihoods, and drawn national attention to the urgent need for a sustainable resolution.
According to the Manhyia Palace, today’s sitting represents the culmination of months of sustained mediation, background consultations, and peace-building efforts.
