Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Alban S.K. Bagbin, has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to leading debt reform efforts globally. This follows a strategic meeting with the Ghana International Trade and Finance Conference (GITFC) as part of preparations for the 9th Annual Global Debt Initiative (GDI) Conference.
Speaker Bagbin emphasized that developing countries face significant challenges due to unsustainable debt and shrinking fiscal space, stressing that African nations must assert themselves in global economic discussions. He noted that trade and finance are Africa’s biggest structural constraints, and without international pressure for debt relief, developing economies will struggle with repayment obligations ¹.
Bagbin’s stance aligns with growing calls for reforms in debt architecture, credit rating systems, and sovereign lending terms. GITFC Acting CEO Mr. Selassie Kofi Ackom praised the Speaker’s understanding of debt dynamics, describing him as a key “thought leader” in the push for fairer financial arrangements.
The 2025 GDI Conference, scheduled for November 27-28, will bring together international lenders, economists, and policymakers to discuss debt crisis solutions and propose recovery pathways. Ghana’s involvement signals its intention to influence global debt discourse.
