The Christian Council of Ghana is calling on President John Dramani Mahama to revive the stalled National Cathedral project, emphasizing its potential as a spiritual and cultural landmark for future generations. Despite the country’s economic challenges, the Council believes the project’s completion would be a significant boost.
Rev. Enoch Thompson, Vice Chairman of the Council, stated, “While we are aware of the prevailing economic difficulties, we believe that the cathedral’s completion, under a transparent, accountable, and inclusive framework, would serve as a spiritual and cultural landmark for generations to come”.
The Council has put forward three key recommendations to President Mahama:
The government should restate its commitment to the project and ensure its continuation. Develop a funding structure involving churches, the private sector, and international partners to reduce pressure on the state. Position the cathedral as a national, interdenominational project to foster unity among Ghanaians.
President Mahama has previously expressed his commitment to completing the project responsibly and transparency, citing the example of Nigeria’s National Ecumenical Centre in Abuja, which was completed at a significantly lower cost of $30 million
