Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, is calling for the urgent appointment of a permanent Defence Minister, citing the need for effective leadership and oversight in the wake of the tragic stampede at El-Wak Sports Stadium. The incident, which claimed six lives and left dozens injured, has highlighted concerns about the recruitment process and safety measures within the Ghana Armed Forces.
Bagbin emphasized that while Acting Defence Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, is capable, the office requires a substantive leader to provide full reports and address pressing issues. He directed the Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Interior to expedite the appointment process, suggesting that a permanent minister would help prevent future tragedies.
The Speaker also questioned the annual recruitment cycle, suggesting a shift towards continuous enlistment to reduce overcrowding and unsafe conditions. The Committee is expected to brief Parliament soon on the recruitment incident and progress towards naming a substantive Defence Minister
