The High Court has withdrawn the bench warrant it issued earlier for the arrest of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The warrant was issued around 9:40 a.m. but was rescinded at 11:39 a.m. after Wontumi appeared in court with his legal team to plead for its withdrawal.
According to his lawyers, Chairman Wontumi had been informed that the proceedings were scheduled for a case management conference at 10 a.m., which led to his slightly delayed arrival. Counsel Andy Appiah-Kubi explained the situation to the court, and the presiding judge accepted the explanation, cautioning the NPP chairman to be punctual in future appearances.
Chairman Wontumi is standing trial alongside Kwame Antwi, a director of Akonta Mining Limited, and the company itself. They are facing charges of assigning mineral rights without lawful authorisation. The court has now rescheduled the case, and Chairman Wontumi’s legal team will continue to defend him against the allegations.
