About 6,255 out-of-school children in the Northern Region will transition into formal education this September through the Complementary Basic Education (CBE) program, facilitated by School for Life, an NGO under the Ghana Education Outcome Project (GEOP). A total of 3,572 males and 2,683 females will join basic 3 and 4 classes after completing a nine-month intensive training in Dagbani, focusing on literacy and numeracy skills.
The CBE program prioritizes girls and targets the most vulnerable, providing foundational skills and a second chance at education. Since 1995, School for Life has reached over 450,000 children through this initiative. Approximately 45-48% of the beneficiaries are girls, reflecting the organization’s commitment to girls’ education.
The Director of School for Life, Wedad Sayibu, expressed joy in being part of the children’s educational journey, emphasizing the importance of inclusive education. The program has been life-changing for many children, enabling them to transition into mainstream education and pursue their dreams. Many beneficiaries have become professionals, including PhD holders, civil servants, and entrepreneurs. Some have even formed an alumni community that mobilizes resources to support their communities and continue the program.
The Director called on stakeholders and the government to continue to support the CBE program, which requires significant resources to deliver. She emphasized the importance of leaving no child behind and urged everyone to support the CBE program to provide access to basic education for all. The Complementary Education Agency, established to oversee and coordinate CBE activities, also needs support to effectively discharge its mandate.
