Fifty-two outstanding students from across Ghana’s 16 regions have been honoured at the annual President’s Independence Day Awards for school children, in recognition of their exceptional academic performance and commitment to excellence.
The ceremony, held as part of activities marking Ghana’s Independence Day celebrations, highlighted the achievements of students drawn from both public and private schools.
The awards were presented under the theme “Building Prosperity, Restoring Hope,” reflecting the government’s broader vision of national renewal through education.
Inclusive Recognition of Excellence
The awardees included students from diverse educational backgrounds and learning environments, demonstrating the inclusive nature of Ghana’s education system.
Among the recipients were students with visual and hearing impairments, whose achievements underscored the importance of ensuring equal opportunities for all learners.
Of the 52 students honoured, 32 were selected from public schools and 16 from private institutions across the country. Four students with special educational needs; two visually impaired and two hearing-impaired, were also recognised for their outstanding academic performance.
The students were selected through a rigorous process coordinated by the Ghana Education Service, which works closely with the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders to identify top-performing candidates from the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
Each award recipient received a laptop computer, plaques, and other educational materials as part of the recognition package, symbolising both their academic achievements and the nation’s investment in nurturing young talent.
Vice President Commends Students
The ceremony was attended by several high-profile dignitaries, including Ghana’s Vice President, Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, who praised the awardees for their dedication and perseverance.
In her remarks, the Vice President congratulated the students for distinguishing themselves through discipline and commitment to learning. She encouraged them to remain focused on their studies while developing the character and values necessary for national leadership.

She noted that the awards programme reflects the values that Ghana’s education system seeks to promote, particularly academic excellence, integrity, and dedication to national development.
“Over the years, the President’s Independence Day Awards have demonstrated what we value in our education system which is dedication to learning,” she stated, urging the students to continue striving for greater achievements.
Strengthening Values and Discipline in Schools
Beyond celebrating academic success, the Vice President also highlighted the importance of discipline and responsible conduct among students.
She expressed concern about emerging issues in schools, including examination malpractice, vandalism, and disrespect toward school authorities. According to her, such behaviours, though limited to a minority of students, could undermine the values that the education system seeks to build.
To address these challenges, the government, through the Ministry of Education and relevant stakeholders, is working to strengthen guidance and counselling systems in schools while reinforcing value-based education.
Education as a Foundation for National Development
The President’s Independence Day Awards programme has long served as a platform for celebrating academic excellence while inspiring students across the country to pursue higher standards in their education.
Established in 1993, the initiative recognises top-performing students from all regions of Ghana based on their results in the BECE. The awards aim not only to reward excellence but also to motivate other learners to strive for academic success.
Officials at the event emphasised that nurturing disciplined and high-achieving students is essential for national development, as today’s learners represent the future leadership of the country. The recognition of the 52 students was widely seen as a reminder of the transformative power of education in shaping Ghana’s future.
